Authorities in northern Japan suspect that a retired couple who vanished during a weekend fishing trip in Hokkaido were victims of a fatal brown bear attack. The search for the couple, identified as 71-year-old Kenji Suzuki and his 68-year-old wife Mariko, began late Sunday after they failed to return from an excursion near the remote Shari River in eastern Hokkaido. Search and rescue teams discovered the couple's parked vehicle on Monday morning, with their fishing gear and personal belongings left untouched. However, further exploration deeper into the dense riverbank area revealed signs of a violent struggle, including torn clothing, scattered gear, and large animal tracks. Local police, alongside wildlife experts, confirmed the presence of fresh Ussuri brown bear footprints and disturbed vegetation consistent with a predatory attack.
