Rep. Chip Roy Calls for Deportation of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Introduces Targeted Legislation

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) has intensified criticism of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, urging his deportation and introducing legislation aimed at denaturalizing and removing individuals he describes as adhering to Marxist or Islamic fundamentalist ideologies.

Roy introduced the Measures Against Marxism’s Dangerous Adherents and Noxious Islamists (MAMDANI) Act in April 2026. The bill seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to allow for the denial of entry, deportation, or denaturalization of noncitizens — and in some cases naturalized citizens — who advocate for or affiliate with socialism, communism, Marxism, or designated Islamic fundamentalist groups. It is explicitly named after Mamdani, a democratic socialist and naturalized U.S. citizen.

Mamdani, born in Uganda to Indian parents, moved to New York City as a child and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. He previously served in the New York State Assembly before being elected mayor in 2025. Roy and supporters argue that Mamdani’s political views and background make him a threat to American values and sovereignty.

In statements, Roy has questioned U.S. immigration policies, stating they have allowed the entry of individuals holding ideologies “fundamentally opposed to American values.” Critics of the bill contend it raises serious free speech and due process concerns by tying immigration status to political beliefs.

The proposal has drawn strong reactions from both sides, highlighting ongoing national debates over immigration enforcement, ideological screening, and the limits of political expression in public office. The bill is not expected to pass in its current form.
